Green energy system for historic ship Jansje
The aim is to investigate how a ship such as Jansje can be equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that uses green energy in the near future: a combination of an electric motor and a generator. This generator can run on various green energy sources: Sea salt battery (dr. Ten) / lithium battery / green methanol / green hydrogen / possibly other green e-fuels. With the results of the reports written by students, an initial pilot will be carried out in 2026-2027.

Renewable Energy Masterplan
Create a renewable energy strategy for the harbour area by assessing solar, wind and aquathermal opportunities. Students develop generation scenarios and recommend the optimal mix of technologies to maximise local renewable energy production.
Student roles:
Sustainable Energy Technology → renewable energy assessment
Civil Engineering → spatial integration and infrastructure
Environmental Science → environmental impact analysis
Data Science → resource mapping and forecasting

Long-Duration Energy Storage Strategy
Investigate how sea-salt batteries, compressed-air storage and other technologies can support the future harbour microgrid. Students analyse technical performance, economics and operational scenarios to determine the most effective storage portfolio.
Student roles:
Sustainable Energy Technology → renewable energy assessment
Civil Engineering → spatial integration and infrastructure
Environmental Science → environmental impact analysis
Data Science → resource mapping and forecasting
Mechanical Engineering → storage technology analysis
Electrical Engineering → system integration
Applied Physics → performance modelling
Business Administration → techno-economic assessment
