De Gezonde Wijk

The Healthy Neighbourhood Learning Community focuses on various domains of health, including physical activity, nutrition, well-being, and healthy lifestyles among the residents of Curaçao. The theme is intentionally broad and multidisciplinary. To provide a clear overview, the main focus areas within this Learning Community are outlined below.

During these projects, you will travel to Curaçao for a period of approximately 2 to 3 months (flexible). The University of Curaçao acts as the client and project partner. Throughout the project, you will collaborate with a diverse network of professionals, researchers, community organisations, and other stakeholders across the island.

Physical inactivity is a major challenge in Curaçao. The most recent data on population physical activity levels dates back to 2017 and originates from research conducted by the Public Health Institute Curaçao (VIC). This highlights the need to reassess the current situation and establish an up-to-date understanding of physical activity patterns on the island. In addition, there is a need for greater insight into the factors associated with high levels of physical inactivity, enabling the development of targeted interventions and evidence-based strategies to promote healthier lifestyles among the population.

Nutrition is a key determinant of health and well-being. The most recent study on the dietary behaviour of young people in Curaçao was conducted by the Public Health Institute Curaçao (VIC) in 2015. As a result, there is a need to reassess current eating habits and gain an up-to-date understanding of dietary behaviours among youth on the island. In addition, this theme focuses on developing and evaluating interventions that encourage healthy eating habits and contribute to improved long-term health outcomes for young people in Curaçao.

The Health Monitor focuses on various dimensions of health, including general health, mental well-being, and loneliness. Within this theme, you can choose a specific health topic that aligns with your interests. In 2024, the Health Monitor was conducted among young people by the University of Curaçao, followed by a survey among adults in 2025. These datasets provide a valuable foundation for further research into health trends, risk factors, and opportunities for improving the well-being of Curaçao’s population.
