Special Expert Lecture on Ecodesign

10-04-2026

Last Friday, we hosted our Special Expert Lecture on Ecodesign about Designing for Cleanability & Creative Problem Solving — and what a session it was.

We kicked off with an eye-opening talk on the geopolitical implications of Ecodesign by Dr. Bart van Straten of GreenCycl, connecting the urgency of a circular healthcare economy to real-world material strategies and sustainable design principles.

Then came the highlight for many in the room: a guest lecture by Harry Oussoren, Expert Sterile Medical Devices at Amsterdam UMC and President of the WFHSS World Federation for Hospital Sterilization Sciences. Harry brought genuine first-hand experience to the table, diving deep into the essentials of cleaning medical devices and what that means for the CSSD systems in hospitals — a perspective that's rarely heard in an academic setting but absolutely essential for future medical technology professionals.

We closed with a Learning Community session led by Noa Buijsman, where students applied Creative Problem Solving and received direct feedback on their own work from peers and professionals - from different backgrounds - in the room. Watching the exchange of ideas was incredible and very helpful, according to the students!

Thank you to our speakers, our students (Nakai Lynn Zimondi, Paloma Rancaño, Udhav Kumar Agnihotri, Sara Saeed, Berk Colak), and everyone who joined us for drinks afterwards. Events like these remind us why bringing academia and industry together matters.
