Greenport of Maassluis
Building on Maassluis’s legacy of maritime innovation, we are launching a 10-year technical learning program toward an energy-self-sustaining harbor. Together with residents, companies, and the municipality, we will develop and validate renewable energy systems through iterative prototyping, real-world testing, and knowledge transfer.
The program focuses on three technical domains: vessel retrofitting, energy-optimized harbor infrastructure (shore power, microgrids, storage), and net-zero wharf adaptations. Each combines theory with hands-on implementation, using Maassluis’s maritime engineering expertise. We learn through structured experimentation—establishing energy baselines, testing technologies in situ, measuring performance against KPIs, and documenting results. Every pilot, from solar arrays on historic wharves to retrofit designs for traditional vessels, generates data that strengthens both local capacity and the national harbor decarbonization roadmap.
In ten years, Maassluis will function as a living laboratory: a fully renewable harbor supported by proven technologies and a skilled workforce trained through direct participation in the energy transition.
